Is Geek Speak Evil?

I am starting to think so. I am not a pro-blogger (but I used to be a fan of expressing one's true self). I am a web developer. Oftentimes, I just have a tendency to write <% @weird = "English" %>. Good thing I don't say "print this, print that" when I talk to people. Geek Speak can be evil in the sense that you are promoting yourself too much or trying to help too much that it actually deters you from just being real.

Social Networking: Why People Want A Different Wheel

I have been wondering why people kept on reinventing the wheel and why there's always more than one version of a software application. There is always a reason for inventing and reinventing something. Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb but probably hundreds of companies today are still trying to improve the lightbulb.

Lessons Learned from Ma.gnolia Story

Ma.gnolia was built with the Ruby on Rails framework four years ago when cloud computing services weren't offered. Moreover, Ma.gnolia is funded, developed and maintained by just one man. That fact alone is astounding because not too many people can create and manage a social networking site by themselves (although I am aware of some geeks who built social networking sites for others but didn't get any richer out of doing it.) He was just about to build a business model out of it but in the past few days, things just didn't turn out well for him. Although I am not a ma.gnolia user (I use digg and del.icio.us), I express my sympathies because in the past I had this illusion of creating a social networking site for young people wherein the app is both a publishing tool and a place for interacting with others. I was not entirely interested in adopting or replicating features of existing social networking sites because personally, I see no need for those features.
